What a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant is, what to expect and questions to ask.
Draft: awaiting clinical review. A named clinician has not checked this page yet. Use it for general information only.
What it is
A bone marrow transplant replaces damaged blood-making cells with healthy stem cells. The cells come from the patient (autologous) or from a donor (allogeneic). It treats some blood cancers and blood disorders.
Who it is for
A blood specialist (haematologist) decides if a transplant is right for you. The hospital does its own tests before it agrees.
The donor
For a donor transplant, the donor must be a close tissue match. A brother or sister is often tested first. The hospital tests the possible donors.
What to expect
- The hospital reviews your reports.
- You and any donor travel for tests.
- You have strong treatment to prepare the bone marrow.
- You receive the stem cells.
- You stay in a protected area of the hospital while your blood counts recover.
A bone marrow transplant needs a long stay. Ask the hospital how many weeks or months to plan for.
Risks
The risks are serious, including infection. Ask the specialist to explain them for your case.
Questions to ask the hospital
- Which type of transplant do I need?
- How long must I and the donor stay in India?
- What does the quote include, and what do complications cost?
- What follow-up do I need in Kenya?
