Heart bypass surgery (CABG) in India

What heart bypass surgery is, what to expect, recovery and questions to ask.

What it is

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is heart surgery. The surgeon uses a blood vessel from another part of your body to carry blood around a blocked artery of the heart.

Who it is for

A heart specialist decides if you need bypass surgery or another treatment, such as a stent. Ask your doctor in Kenya which treatments are available locally.

What to expect

  1. The hospital reviews your reports, including your angiogram.
  2. You travel and have more tests.
  3. You have surgery and stay in hospital for some days.
  4. You stay near the hospital for a check before you fly home.

Ask the hospital when it is safe for you to fly.

Recovery

Recovery takes some weeks. You need to rest, take your medicines and slowly increase your activity. A heart rehabilitation programme helps. Ask if one is available near your home.

Risks

Every heart operation has risks. Ask the surgeon to explain the risks for your case.

Questions to ask the hospital

  • Do I need bypass surgery, or is a stent an option?
  • How many days in hospital does the quote cover?
  • When can I fly home?
  • Which medicines do I need after surgery?
  • Who checks me in Kenya after I return?
