What IVF is, what to expect and questions to ask a fertility clinic.
Draft: awaiting clinical review. A named clinician has not checked this page yet. Use it for general information only.
What it is
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) joins eggs and sperm in a laboratory. The clinic then puts an embryo into the womb.
Before you decide
A fertility specialist checks both partners first. Ask your doctor in Kenya about local fertility clinics too.
What to expect
- The clinic reviews your test results.
- The woman takes medicines to help the ovaries make eggs.
- The clinic collects the eggs and makes embryos.
- The clinic puts an embryo into the womb.
- A pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.
Ask the clinic how many days you must stay in India for each step.
Success and cost
Success depends on age and health. One cycle may not be enough. Ask what each extra cycle costs.
Rules
India has laws on assisted reproduction and on surrogacy. Ask the clinic which rules apply to foreign patients.
Questions to ask the clinic
- What are my chances, based on my own tests?
- What does one cycle cost, and what is extra?
- How long must we stay in India?
- What happens to embryos that we do not use?
